New Orleans wouldn't be the same without its famous streetcars, especially the beloved St. Charles Avenue line. This historic mode of transportation has been rolling through the streets since 1835, making it the oldest continuously operating streetcar line in the world.
More than just a way to get around, these streetcars are a symbol of New Orleans' rich culture, celebrated in literature, film, and beyond.

Who do we have to thank for the design of these enduring streetcars?
Perley Thomas, a mechanically gifted Canadian-born woodworker who later became a master streetcar designer. After founding his own company in 1916, Perley Thomas designed streetcars not only for New Orleans but for cities across the U.S. and even in Central and South America.
The Perley Thomas streetcars, known for their durability and distinctive arch-roof design, are still in use today—over 100 years later!
